Understanding Australian PPSR Write-Off Categories

What statutory vs repairable write-offs mean, and why they matter for vehicles imported from Australia.

Technical Team5 March 20266 min read

When importing from Australia, understanding PPSR write-off categories is critical.

Statutory Write-Off

A statutory write-off means the vehicle has been so severely damaged that it can never be registered again in Australia. The vehicle is only good for parts. Categories include: fire damage beyond repair, flood damage to critical systems, and structural deformation.

Repairable Write-Off

A repairable write-off means the vehicle was uneconomical to repair relative to its value, but CAN be repaired and re-registered. This is common with hail damage, minor collision damage, or theft recovery.

What This Means for Kenyan Importers

A repairable write-off from Australia CAN be a good deal if properly repaired. A statutory write-off should NEVER be imported — it indicates catastrophic damage.
